Small – WE MADE THAT

As Part of wider scheme to make the area surrounding Three Mills Green (in the borough of Newham), a destination in its own right and as a desirable place to live, work and visit, an open design competition was announced. Three Mills Green was seen as a large open land that was sadly underused and plans were made to make the park more accessible and attractive through the use of gardens, events space, and recreational sports and play space. Architects, landscape architects, designers and artists were invited to complete a questionnaire to express their interest in taking part.

Participants were required to have experience of designing for the public realm, experience in the delivery of built projects, ability to work with external collaborators/local community/stakeholders.The budget we were asked to work towards for the construction of the project was £80,000-£100,000.

The area is currently an industrial area with an increasing number of creatives working in the area. An increase in employment with an attraction to new residents, and young families, place for cultural and creative activities is encouraged.

The Client, Lee Valley Regional Park Authority (the land owners),  and The Legacy List charity and the Olympic Park Legacy Company required the design for the playground itself was to create spaces that would encourage creative, and energetic play and interaction with nature for the local children and possibly families visiting the area. An understanding of the needs of children, and families were needed to be able to design accordingly.

The Park itself is surrounded by waterways and is part of the ‘Fatwalk’.
